Pandemic Dram: The Final Ed-Ward
1 oz Rabbit Hole Kentucky Straight Rye
3/4 oz Green Chartreuse
3/4 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
1 oz Eddy Bar Ward 8 Mix
Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a coup glass.
As with the last couple of weeks and hopefully, the next few for as long as it will be before I can actually sit down and have a drink there, I stopped by The Eddy Bar here in Providence and picked up my order of this week’s mixer offerings. The first up was their Ward 8 mix.
For this, I knew I wanted to do a little more than just mix it with Rye and make a classic Ward 8. I decided to go down the rabbithole of Last Word variations. The Last Word is a lovely 1.1.1.1 drink made with equal parts of Gin, Chartreuse, Maraschino, and Lime and there are scrolls worth of variations. Luckily, it’s an easy, short trip to find the Final Ward. The Final Ward takes out the Gin and replaces it with Rye where it presumably gets the name variation from “Word” to “Ward” from the Ward 8 which, of course, uses Rye. So, instead of just boring Lemon Juice by itself, this filch is a Final Ward with even more Ward 8 goodness.
I didn’t quite use the 1.1.1.1 ratio with this because I wanted the extra booze of a Ward 8 and I wanted to use a full ounce of the Eddy Ward 8 mix. I absolutely love this. If I were to just make this I’d use 1/2 oz Lemon juice, 1/4 oz Orange juice, and 1/4 oz Grenadine for the Ward 8 mix, though there is some Eddy magic in this mix that makes it better than just these 3 ingredients. I imagine it could be that they make their own special Grenadine?
