Pandemic Drams: Lion’s Tail and Gin Cosmo
This week I got a couple more of the mixers made by one of my local favorites here in Providence, The Eddy. If you remember some posts from last weekend, they’ve been making some mixers and making them available for pickup to help alleviate the current crisis. This week’s haul was a Lion’s Tail mix and a Cosmopolitan mix. They also offered a Spicy Mango mix which I did pass on as I really can’t do a whole lot with really spicy mixes. Instead, I went with a nostalgia tug and got some ponies. When I was a kid, I always thought that pony cans were just kid sized beer.
First up is the Eddy Cosmo. They list this mix as “The classic cosmo made the eddy way. We use orange zest and real cranberries in our house mix, pair that with fresh lime juice and you got a great cocktail.”
The Cosmopolitan is one of those old classics that despite being usually made with Vodka, is still rather good. Personally, I like it as a Gin Cosmo and I have to say that this is probably the best Cosmopolitan that I’ve ever made. That said, I think the only Cosmopolitans I have here on this site are the Absinthe Cosmopolitan and a lovely addition to my Cocktails From Beyond called Shatner’s Gremlin.
Second is The Lion’s Tale, a classic that I don’t think I’ve ever made before. I did, however, use a drink called the White Lion to make a new Mythos Absinthe Cocktail called The Albino Penguin. That White Lion looks a whole lot like a Lion’s Tale made with Rum instead of Bourbon.
This Eddy mix is listed as “A classic bourbon sour variation which features warm spice from allspice and brightness from fresh lime juice.’ which also, I guess, makes this as a filch of a daiquiri. Their mix is absolutely lovely, any time I use Allspice I end up overdoing it.
Now, when I see a drink called The Lion’s Tail, I instantly want to try to make a variation… maybe with Orange Juice instead of Lime, you know, because it’s orange. Something else that’s orange is a Tiger. I’m really trying to hold back fro making a variation of the Lion’s Tail called The Tiger King., but made with Orange Juice, and, well, Meth.
